While summer may be getting off to a slow start here in St. Louis, we all know these cooler temps won’t last long. We’re heading straight into the long, hot days of summer, and that means BBQ season. To host fun, relaxing backyard events (big or small), you need the right outdoor lighting. It’s not just about visibility—it’s about creating an inviting atmosphere that lets people relax, connect, and enjoy the evening. So think beyond the brats and beers. Here’s how to set up your outdoor lighting situation for a yard that’s party-ready anytime.
1. Mix and match light sources
A well-lit backyard, like any well-designed room, uses layers of light to create comfort and style. Aim to combine the three types:
- Ambient lighting: This is your general illumination. It’s subtle, not bright. In fact, it’s often not noticeable unless it isn’t there. Ambient lighting is the soft glow that fills the space and keeps things visible.
- Task lighting: Focused, brighter light for specific areas like the grill, buffet table, or bar. Task lighting belongs anywhere guests need to see clearly to serve food or make drinks.
- Accent lighting: Decorative touches that highlight plants, trees, pathways, or architectural features. Well-placed accent lights add depth and interest to your space.
Balancing these layers keeps your yard well-lit without feeling harsh or overdone.
2. String lights are your best friend
String lights are easy to use, instantly festive, and adaptable to almost any space.
There are two main types to consider:
- Bistro lights: These are the larger, café-style bulbs you often see at restaurants or patios. They’re perfect for permanent installation if you want a party-ready setup all season long.
- Mini string lights: Smaller, twinkle-style strands you can wrap around trees, railings, or umbrellas. They’re ideal for quick DIY setups when you want to add charm to a one-off event.
Bistro lights are great for delineating sections of a larger outdoor space. Use them to create a café-style dining area on one side of the deck or a cozy seating area in a corner of the yard.
3. Think in lighting zones
Think about your backyard in terms of zones and light each one based on its use:
- The grill or prep station needs strong task lighting so you can cook see when it’s time to flip the burgers.
- The dining area benefits from soft, flattering light. People need to see what they’re eating, but without harsh lights or bright beams directed up at their faces. So you want lighting that hangs down, dropping soft beams over the area. Pendant lights and bistro lights are perfect. Also, consider ambient lighting along rails, walls, or in nearby landscaping.
- The lounge area should feel warm and laid-back. Use dimmable bistro lights and lanterns. Add a string lights on nearby structures or hardscaping. If you have a fire pit, use path lights to create a perimeter around it.
- Walkways and paths need good lighting so people can see where they’re walking. This is especially important if you have stairs or different surfaces (like a path that goes from gravel to tile to grass). Pathway light fixtures are subtly lit with the beam directed downward, where it’s needed.
- Games or activity zones—like a cornhole setup or kid-friendly space—might need additional lighting to keep the fun going after dark. A combination of ambient lighting and spotlighting often works well.
Zoning your lighting helps guide guests naturally through your space and makes the whole area feel more intentional.
4. Go warm and dimmable
The color temperature of your bulbs affects the vibe more than you might expect. Cool-toned lights (5000K and up) can feel stark and clinical—great for task work, not so much for relaxing.
Your lights should be in the 2200K–2700K range for a soft, golden-hour glow. Even better if you have smart fixtures so you can adjust brightness as the evening progresses.
5. Add temporary lighting for special events
If you have a solid, well-designed outdoor lighting system in place, you don’t have to do anything extra. But why not have a little fun with it? There are lots of temporary or portable lighting options you can add to the space for special events and gatherings. Classic tiki torches, tabletop lamps, and hanging lanterns are perfect for bringing a little extra to those special events. Create a theme, choose colors and adjust your smart bistro lights or rooftop lights to match, and make the night magical.
Lighting might not be the first thing you plan for a backyard BBQ, but it’s one of the fastest ways to elevate the experience. Plus, it’s still going to be there when the party’s over. You can keep enjoying the benefits of great outdoor lighting even after summer fades.
